COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The study of fundamental design concepts and elements as they are applied to digital media.

GOALS OF THE COURSE
1. To introduce students to various forms of digital media, including animation, interactive media (CD, DVD, and Web) and video;
2. To teach students to conceptualize and storyboard the various formats of digital media;
3. To familiarize students with the technical and creative aspects of digital media;
4. To reinforce and build upon student knowledge of developing basic design concepts, including drawing, color, typography, concept development, writing, and public speaking.
5. To teach fundamental presentation skills.


COURSE OF STUDY:
• The first part of the semester will be spent researching digital media markets. Students will make a presentation to the class covering emerging trends, and examples of professional work for a chosen market.

• The second part of the semester will be spent developing a marketing plan for pursuing their work a particular digital media market. This career plan will include developing a database of relevant companies, professional organizations and agents. Students will make a presentation to the class covering legal issues, pricing/salary, agents, market demographics, potential clients and their promotional plan for a chosen market.

• The third part of the semester will be spent on User Experience Design. We will work with a client (Spectrum Health) to go through the phases of the design process including define, plan and propose. Execution of the project will be continued later in the students' experience at Kendall. We will use the website DMUX Design to work through an interactive project which will include still images and moving images.

DEFINE • the project with the client's problem statement and meeting the client.
PLAN • the interactive project which will include benchmarking, wireframing and site-mapping.
PLAN • the still images for the project which will include benchmarking and sketching.
PLAN • the moving images which will include benchmarking, sketching and story-boarding.
PROPOSE • our concept to the client by preparing, summarizing, detailing and creating a leave behind which will include an estimate.

• The instructor will perform demonstrations/tutorials on using software.

ATTENDANCE:
• More than 3 unexcused absences will negatively effect your grade.
• Each absence beyond 3 will continue to negatively effect your grade.
• Arriving to class late and/or leaving early will also lower your grade.
• Arriving to class late and/or leaving early 3 times will equal one absence.

GRADING WILL BE BASED ON:
• Timeliness and presentation.
• Missing a deadline will equal an F for that project.
• Quality of research and assignment preparation.
• Quality of project execution.

MATERIALS:
• Backup plan: an external hard drive.
• Laptop required everyday unless you have extenuating circumstances
